Car insurance and common sense

Car insurance and common sense

Purchasing car insurance will never be painless, but you can save money by just applying common sense to your car insurance needs and purchases.  One of the first ways you should apply common sense is in choosing the car.  If you think about the cost of the car insurance premium before you purchase the vehicle, you're likely to save a lot of money.  It's a well known fact that certain types of vehicles are more expensive to insure than others.

If you do some searching, you can probably find a vehicle that is comparable for far less cost in insurance. A car doesn't have to be expensive to command a high insurance premium cost.  If a car is known as a thief magnet--one which is at a higher risk of being stolen, you may end up paying much higher rates.  Of course, if you take a proactive stance and install anti-theft devices, you can at least partially offset the higher premium cost.

Your insurance coverage is important when determining the level of your insurance rates.  For example, if your auto is insured at its purchase price and is two years old, chances are good that the car is insured for far more than it it worth, or than you would receive from the insurance company in the event of a claim.  You should make sure you have adequate coverage of course, but paying premium for unusable coverage just doesn't show good common sense on your part. You can save even more money on premiums by considering the amount of deductible you will be paying.  As the car ages, it eventually begins to near the level of the deductible.

It depreciates to the point where if you subtract the deductible, the insurance company will refuse to fix the car, because the car is worth less the what it would cost to fix it.  If you are still paying for a low deductible in the expectation that the car will be repaired in the event of an accident, you may be in for a rude awakening.

These examples are not meant to suggest the purchasing an expensive car is wrong or that extensive insurance is wrong.  They are mentioned for the purpose of showing that you can pay less for your insurance coverage and continue adequate coverage just by using your sense of judgment.

In using common sense, it is also apparent that what works for one set of insurance circumstances may very well be all wrong in another.  You must determine what is the best coverage for you and how best to accomplish that on your budget.

Another way to use common sense is to study the options available to you concerning coverage, choice of agents, payment plans and locations. Generally insurance policies provided through online agents will cost less money, simply because the overhead for the agent or company is less.  There is also an advantage to being able to purchase the policy online quickly and easily.
